Giants Sign Affeldt

The San Francisco Giants made a superb signing on Monday, inking reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a 2-year deal worth $8M. Affeldt had a good season in Cincinatti, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA for a club with a definite lack of pitchers. He will likely get the set-up nod for the Giants, who just landed a tremendous 29 year old left hander.

It's definitely a good deal for GM Brian Sabean and San Francisco, landing one of the top 4 relievers on the market to a slightly below market value deal. While they were linked to another free-agent lefty in Joe Beimel, this deal likely pushes them out of the running. Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria seem like two other candidates that the Giants could land.

It doesn't make too much sense that the Giants would be going after Renteria and Furcal at the same time. If they are, Renteria may be the front runner because he will come a lot cheaper.

Renteria actually performed closer to the start of his career in 2008 than his St. Louis/Atlanta days. If I was a team signing him, I would expect that. It would be an improvement over Vizquel offensively.

As for Furcal, I don't think he'll be making his decision anytime soon. There may be things that play out that affect where he wants to go.

Oh, and the Affeldt signing was very, very shrewd. :)

Well I did mean that they would either get Renteria or Furcal and not both. Your absolutely right on the point that Furcal will wait it out though, especially with so much interest going around.

Thanks for the comment!
